Overview
NIT Silchar was founded in 1967 as the Regional Engineering College of Assam, a joint venture of the central and state governments. It became a National Institute of Technology in 2002 and was declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, 2007. The institute offers B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, MBA and PhD programmes across engineering, sciences, humanities and management. Its campus lies in Silchar, Assam's second-largest city on the banks of the Surma river.
