Overview
NIT Karnataka began in 1960 as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), set up largely through the efforts of the philanthropist U. Srinivasa Mallya, after whom the campus locality Srinivasnagar is named. It was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology in 2002. The institute sits on a large residential campus at Surathkal, on the coast near Mangalore in Karnataka. It runs undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes across engineering, science, management and the humanities.
