Overview

IIT Roorkee traces its roots to 1847, when it was founded as the Roorkee College, the first engineering college in India, and rechristened the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. It became the University of Roorkee in 1949 and was converted into an IIT on September 21, 2001, the seventh in the country.
