With the Round 1 allotment result due on November 2, the seat matrix published by the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training (DGME), Uttar Pradesh, is the document that decides what is actually up for grabs. It lists 3,961 MD and MS seats across 71 medical colleges in the state, with a separate matrix of 164 DNB seats.

The MD and MS matrix was approved on October 24, 2026, and the DNB matrix a day earlier, on October 23. Both are available on the official UP NEET counselling portal, along with the Round 1 state merit list, which names 6,084 candidates eligible for the 50 percent state quota MD and MS seats.

Government seats are less than a third of the total

Of the 3,961 MD and MS seats, 1,095 are in government medical colleges and 2,866 are in private colleges. The 71 colleges in the matrix split into 35 government and 36 private institutions.

The category break-up of the government seats is 438 unreserved, 291 backward class, 226 scheduled caste, 22 scheduled tribe and 110 economically weaker section, with the remaining 8 seats in two small special categories, adding up to the 1,095 total. All 2,866 private college seats are shown under the unreserved category, which takes the overall unreserved count to 3,304.

Two details in the matrix deserve a careful read. Several course entries carry zero seats, so a course appearing in the list does not always mean a seat is open in this round. The matrix reflects the Round 1 position; later rounds will use revised figures as seats are taken, resigned or added.

Where the largest seat counts sit

King George’s Medical University in Lucknow holds 186 seats, the highest count among government colleges. Among private colleges, Rohilkhand Medical College in Bareilly leads with 166 seats, followed by Subharti Medical College in Meerut with 146. Sarojini Naidu Medical College in Agra lists 106 seats, and T.S. Misra Medical College and Hospital in Lucknow lists 83.

The DNB matrix is smaller and entirely on the government side. Its 164 seats are spread across government hospitals and colleges, and DGME published it as a separate document, so candidates should check the two matrices separately rather than adding them together.

What happens next

Choice filling and locking for Round 1 closed at 5 pm on October 30, so the matrix now serves a different purpose: it lets candidates check the allotment when it comes out on November 2. Knowing how many seats a college actually offered, and in which category, helps a candidate judge whether an allotment looks right.

Candidates allotted a seat in Round 1 must report to their college and finish admission between November 3 and 12, 2026. Missing that window risks losing the seat. DGME has already barred 144 candidates from this session’s counselling after they resigned or failed to report in earlier sessions.

Before reporting, it is worth running through the admission documents checklist so the paperwork does not stall a confirmed seat. Colleges usually ask first for the NEET PG scorecard, MBBS degree, internship completion certificate and medical registration certificate. DGME also posts counselling notices on dgme.up.gov.in.
