Two students from Mumbai will get a chance to study at the University of York in England under a new scholarship that also includes work experience in British businesses. The Mayor’s Gateway Scholarship was announced on October 16 at the University of York Mumbai, by David Skaith, the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, during the region’s trade mission to India.

The scholarship is funded by the University of York Mumbai. It will initially support two students from Mumbai with a stint in York, and the package includes work experience opportunities meant to give the students a direct look at business and industry in York and North Yorkshire.

How it was announced

Skaith announced the scholarship alongside a delegation of business leaders visiting India as part of the trade mission. The visit began with a wider Great North delegation of more than 200 representatives in New Delhi, followed by York and North Yorkshire representatives touring Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore.

“The University of York Mumbai gives our county a permanent base for academia, skills and innovation in one of the world’s fastest growing major economies, supporting leading research on global issues like food security and emerging technologies,” Skaith said. “I am delighted to champion the Mayor’s Gateway Scholarship, providing students with the opportunity to develop their education across two continents and two vibrant cities.”

York Mumbai’s first students

The scholarship comes weeks after the University of York’s Mumbai campus welcomed its first cohort of students in September. Undergraduate and postgraduate studies have begun in Creative Industries, Business, and Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security.

A new research and policy institute, the Institute for Good Society, was also launched after the campus opened. It will focus on major global challenges including artificial intelligence, urbanisation and climate change, and will also target research on food security and future technologies.

Professor Lindsay Oades, Provost of the University of York Mumbai, said: “We aim to provide our students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to study and work anywhere in the world, and so scholarships like this are significant in giving students international experience.”

Who can apply

The scholarship is initially limited to two students from Mumbai. The university has published the eligibility and application details on its official scholarships page. Students looking at funding routes in general should also check our guide to scholarships for Indian university students, which covers what else is available this cycle.

A growing field

York is part of a wider arrival of foreign universities in India. Earlier this month, the University of Western Australia’s Chennai campus began classes on October 19, its second campus in the country after Mumbai. UNSW opened its Bengaluru campus in August, and the University of Bristol’s Mumbai enterprise campus welcomed its first students in September.

For students weighing these new campuses against established Indian universities, the questions worth asking are the ordinary ones: how the degree is awarded and recognised, what the full fee looks like, and who actually teaches. Our guide to choosing a university in India runs through that checklist.
