PhD seats at 3 central universities: 1,200+ openings, 2 deadlines on October 30

Two of the three central universities offering PhD admission this month share the same deadline: October 30. Central University of South Bihar and North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, will both shut their application windows that day. The third, Jawaharlal Nehru University, closed its window on October 16.
Between the three, more than 1,200 doctoral seats are on offer for the 2026-27 academic year, according to a SkillOutlook report published on October 19. The seats are split across the full range of university departments, from the sciences and engineering to the humanities and law.
Central University of South Bihar: 295 seats, October 30 deadline
The Gaya-based university opened its online application portal on October 17 and will accept forms until October 30, 2026. The total number of vacant PhD seats is 295.
Admission will be based on UGC-NET scores, in line with the UGC public notice dated March 27, 2024. That notice sets out three categories of NET qualification: JRF and Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor and PhD admission, and PhD admission only. NEHU Shillong: 40+ departments, two campuses
NEHU’s notification covers more than 40 departments across its Shillong and Tura campuses. The list includes commerce, economics, English, Hindi, Khasi, linguistics, history, political science, sociology, law, botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, biotechnology, environmental studies, electronics and communication engineering, information technology, biomedical engineering, and computer application, among others.
The application fee is ₹500, or ₹250 for SC/ST candidates, payable online through debit card, credit card, or net banking via SBI or HDFC Bank. The deadline is October 30, 2026. The official notification is listed under the “Admissions 2026” section of the university website, nehu.ac.in.
JNU’s window has already closed
For context: JNU invited applications for 711 PhD seats, with 329 allotted through NET percentile scores of the UGC or CSIR examinations, 369 for NET-JRF qualified candidates, and 13 through GATE. The online window ran from October 6 to 16 and has now closed.
Apply before October 30
NEHU and Central University of South Bihar both require the form to be submitted online by October 30.
