The National Testing Agency has opened applications for a new panel of exam observers, and the call is aimed at retired officials and teachers. Applications opened on November 7 and will stay open till December 6, 2026.
Observers will be posted at exam centres for NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET, UGC NET and other NTA examinations, in both computer-based and pen-and-paper modes. NTA runs some of India’s largest entrance and eligibility exams every year, and the observer panel is how it keeps watch inside exam centres. The agency is building a pool of people it can call on whenever an exam cycle needs staff at centres across the country.
Who can apply
Applications are open in three categories. Category A covers retired central and state government officers who retired from posts above Pay Level 8 under the 7th Central Pay Commission. Applicants in this category must be between 60 and 65 years old on the last date of application.
Category B covers retired personnel of the Indian Armed Forces and the Central Armed Police Forces who held the rank of Subedar Major or an equivalent rank and above. Applicants here must not be older than 65, and there is no minimum age limit.
Category C covers serving and retired teachers and professors from government schools, colleges and universities. Retired applicants must be between 60 and 65. Serving applicants have no upper age limit while they are in service, but they need a no-objection certificate from their employer.
Every applicant must be physically fit, willing to travel outside their headquarters if required, and free of pending disciplinary or vigilance proceedings.
What observers do on exam day
Observers attend a mandatory briefing meeting one day before the examination and report to their assigned centre ahead of the reporting time. On the day itself they check candidate identity verification and frisking, watch the seating arrangements and the distribution and collection of examination material, check that CCTV and webcasting are working, and confirm the electricity backup is in place.
Any irregularity, security lapse or malpractice goes straight to the NTA in a report filed through the portal. The notice also sets out the payment for the briefing and for exam-day duty.
How to apply
Applications go through the official observer management portal, where candidates submit their personal and service details along with the documents listed in the notice. Serving applicants will need a no-objection certificate from their employer.
These exams decide admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses across India, so the panel matters to students as much as to the people applying for it. Candidates weighing their options can read how to choose a university in India before the next admission cycle opens.
The December 6 deadline leaves about four weeks. Anyone who fits one of the three categories and is willing to travel for exam duty should read the notice and apply before the portal closes.
