A phone call may soon be enough to get a straight answer from the NTA. The National Testing Agency is testing an artificial-intelligence-powered helpline that answers students’ exam questions in multiple languages, on the toll-free number 1800 180 47 47.
What the helpline will answer
Students will be able to ask about exam dates, eligibility criteria, application procedures, fees, documents and deadlines for exams like JEE and UGC-NET. Officials told The Indian Express the AI system is being trained on the NTA’s own database, so the answers will come from official records rather than scattered pages across the web.
The language option is the point. A student who struggles with English forms will be able to ask in the language they are comfortable with, and the system is expected to reply in kind. Officials gave examples of the questions it should handle: “When is JEE?”, “When is the UGC-NET examination?”, “How much fee do I have to pay?”, “What documents are required?”, “What is the last date?”
A number with a history
The toll-free number is not new. It was earlier used by the High Power Task Force on examination reforms, headed by Nandan Nilekani, to collect suggestions from stakeholders. That exercise started in August and the submission window closed on September 13. With the committee now preparing its final report, the line was lying unused, so officials decided to recast it as the NTA’s help desk, The Indian Express reported.
Not launched yet
The helpline has not been announced publicly. The NTA is testing the toll-free service and its AI features, and no launch date has been given. Until the announcement comes, the existing helpdesk channels remain the only official way to reach the agency. Any call or message claiming to be the new AI helpline should be treated with caution.
Why the timing matters
The development lands right before a busy window. JEE Main 2027 Session 1 registrations are expected to open soon, with the exam slated for late January, and that is when the NTA helpdesk is usually flooded with questions about forms, documents and fee payment. Our admission documents checklist covers the paperwork and scans worth keeping ready before any NTA application window opens.
We also tracked the UGC NET December 2026 notification this month, where the NTA revised exam dates and parts of the evaluation rules.
