Applications for the January 2027 PhD session at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli close at 11:59 pm on November 13, 2026. The institute accepts applications only through its online portal, so the form, documents and fee payment should not be left for the last evening.

The programme covers 17 departments. Engineering sits alongside sciences, architecture and planning, computer applications, management, and humanities and social sciences, Departments set their own academic requirements on top of the institute-wide eligibility rules, so the department brochure is worth reading before choosing where to apply.

Full-time candidates can apply under three categories: Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA), externally funded, and non-stipendiary. Part-time admission is offered as in-service admission, with internal and external options. The category decides whether a candidate gets a stipend, brings an outside fellowship, or continues in an existing job while doing the PhD. Candidates with their own fellowships from agencies such as UGC, CSIR or DST fall under the externally funded category.

Who can apply

The basic bar is a master’s degree in the relevant discipline with 60% marks or a 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the requirement drops to 55% or a 6.0 CGPA. Engineering graduates holding a BE, BTech or BArch degree can also apply for direct PhD admission, subject to the merit criteria set by each department.

A valid GATE, UGC NET, CSIR NET or equivalent score is required for most funded seats. A qualifying score cannot be arranged at the last minute, so candidates without one should check whether their chosen category asks for it before paying the fee. Reservation for eligible categories applies as per Government of India norms.

Dates, fee and how to apply

The application fee is charged separately for each department a candidate applies to. It is Rs 1,000 per department for OC, OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS candidates, and Rs 500 per department for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The fee multiplies with each department applied to, so shortlist departments first.

To apply, visit the official NIT Trichy PhD admission portal and register with a working email address and phone number. Fill in the personal and academic details, select the department, upload the photograph, signature, mark sheets and category certificate where applicable, pay the fee, and download the confirmation page. Keep the confirmation page safe; departments ask for application details again at the test and interview stage.

The official NIT Trichy PhD admissions page carries the information brochure, the forms and the portal link. If anything in a news report and the brochure disagree, the brochure is the document to follow, since departments can add criteria of their own.

After the deadline

Written tests and interviews are scheduled from December 15 to 17, 2026. Departments run their own selection process, and the January 2027 session starts after that round is complete. Candidates should watch the official admissions page for shortlist and reporting instructions rather than waiting for an individual message.

Our guide to choosing a university in India sets out how to weigh a department’s research record against its location and funding, and our admission documents checklist covers the papers usually needed at the reporting stage.
