On November 4, 321 students will collect their degrees at the National Institute of Technology Meghalaya campus in Sohra. The institute’s 13th convocation will also hand out 15 academic medals, seven gold and eight silver, to its highest achievers.

Director Pinakeswar Mahanta shared the details at a press briefing on October 31, ahead of the ceremony. Dr Anand Deshpande, founder, chairman and managing director of Persistent Systems, will attend as chief guest. Professor Devendra Jalihal, director of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, will be the guest of honour, and Sunil Alagh, chairman of the institute’s Board of Governors, will preside over the proceedings.

Who graduates this year

The 321 graduands span every level of study at the institute. The largest group is 158 BTech students, followed by 56 MTech students, 52 MSc students and 55 PhD scholars. That mix shows an institute that now produces research scholars alongside its engineers.

For families in the Northeast, the convocation matters for a practical reason. NIT Meghalaya is the region’s own National Institute of Technology, and its Sohra campus is now its permanent home after years of operating from Shillong. Students who want a centrally funded engineering education without leaving the region can aim for it through JEE Main and JoSAA counselling, the same route that feeds the other NITs.

Placements: 230 companies, 75.69% placed

The placement figures released with the convocation announcement give applicants a concrete sense of what follows the degree. In the 2025-26 season, 230 companies visited the campus, and 75.69% of eligible students secured jobs. The institute had earlier rounded the figure to 75% in its briefing, and the fuller number came out in the detailed reports that followed.

A placement rate in the mid-70s will not top the charts set by the oldest NITs, and applicants should read it that way. It does show a campus where the placement cell brings in a wide set of recruiters rather than depending on a handful of firms. For students weighing NIT Meghalaya against other options, the number of visiting companies is often as useful as the percentage itself, since it hints at how many different sectors recruit there.

Ranked 83rd in NIRF engineering

NIT Meghalaya held on to a place inside the top 100 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025, ranking 83rd in India in engineering. Rankings move slowly for younger institutes, and holding a top-100 spot while shifting to a permanent campus is a result the institute has pointed to in its briefings. Our NIRF rankings explained guide sets out what the framework measures and where its limits lie.

The institute has also been reshaping its teaching under the National Education Policy 2020. The changes include revised curricula, joint MTech programmes run with IITs and other institutes, and more digital learning. BTech students can now take up extended industry internships after their third year, a shift meant to close the gap between classroom work and the jobs graduates actually take up.

What to watch on November 4

The convocation itself is a one-day event, but the numbers around it will feed the next admission cycle. Applicants tracking NIT Meghalaya should check the official NIT Meghalaya website for the convocation updates and for admission notices as the JEE Main cycle progresses. Our how to choose a university in India guide covers how to weigh a younger NIT against older, higher-ranked options.

The medal winners will be named on the day.
