Eight hundred and eighty-seven. That is the number of research papers from India that were retracted in 2025, according to the global watchdog Retraction Watch, second only to China. It is also the number behind the unusual delay of this year’s NIRF rankings, which are still unpublished in mid-October, weeks after the usual August-September window.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework ranks India’s universities, colleges and research institutions across seventeen categories, from engineering and management to law, pharmacy and medicine. The Ministry of Education has not announced a revised release date.
Why the rankings are stuck
The hold-up is research data. The National Board of Accreditation, the autonomous body under the education ministry that runs the ranking exercise, found retracted papers inside the submissions made by participating institutions. Careers360 reported on October 6 that the government is now taking a close look at the institutions involved, and the Hindustan Times reported the next day that the NBA is examining research papers, citations and institutional data.
Research output feeds directly into one of NIRF’s five parameters: teaching and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and peer perception. A paper gets retracted for reasons like plagiarism, manipulated data, duplicate publication or fake peer review. When withdrawn papers are still counted in an institution’s tally, the score they produce cannot be trusted.
What the government might do
Officials are looking beyond this year’s tables. ThePrint, cited by Careers360, reported that the NBA is considering keeping institutions that repeatedly submit questionable research data out of future NIRF rankings. That proposal has not been confirmed as a final decision. Moneycontrol reported that no new release date has been announced at all.
What this means for students
The delay changes nothing about admissions. Counselling rounds run on entrance exam scores, not on NIRF tables. But the rankings are the reference most students open first when they compare institutes, and for now those comparisons will have to wait.
Students who rely on the engineering or university tables will have to compare institutes directly in the meantime. University profiles on this site, from IIT Madras to the central universities, list verified facts on courses and fees. Our guide to NIRF rankings breaks down what each parameter measures, and the guide to choosing a university in India lists what to check beyond a rank number. Official updates, when they come, will appear on the official NIRF website.
Frequently asked questions
Why have the NIRF 2026 rankings been delayed?
Authorities are verifying the research data submitted by institutions after retracted papers were flagged in submissions. The National Board of Accreditation is reviewing research papers, citations and institutional data, and the process has run past the usual August-September window.
When will the NIRF 2026 rankings be released?
No revised date has been announced. The Ministry of Education has not given a new timeline, so the official NIRF website is where the update will appear first.
Will institutions be banned from future NIRF rankings?
The NBA is reportedly considering debarring institutions that repeatedly submit questionable research data from future rankings, but the proposal has not been confirmed as a final decision.
Do the NIRF rankings affect college admissions?
No. Admissions run on entrance exam scores and counselling schedules, not on NIRF tables. The rankings are a comparison tool that students use while shortlisting institutes.
