Ten days. That is how much time CLAT 2027 aspirants have left to check their application form if they are hoping for a seat at Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai. On October 21, the Consortium of National Law Universities revised the university’s reservation criteria and seat matrix, adding separate 1 per cent reservations for transgender candidates and orphan candidates in both its undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes.
The change applies to the five-year BA LLB (Honours) programme and the one-year LLM programme at MNLU Mumbai. Candidates who qualify under either new category can update their reservation details in the CLAT 2027 application form by October 31, 2026, on the official CLAT portal. The Consortium has asked applicants to read the revised admission brochure and confirm their eligibility before making any changes.
What the new quotas add
Under the revised criteria, 1 per cent of the total sanctioned seats goes to transgender candidates and another 1 per cent to orphan candidates, for both programmes. Both categories sit within the Maharashtra state reservation framework, and this is the first time either appears as a named quota in the university’s CLAT admission rules.
The revised seat matrix
According to the revised brochure, MNLU Mumbai offers 100 seats in BA LLB (Honours) and 50 seats in the LLM programme through CLAT, subject to the reservation norms. Of these, 27 UG seats and 12 PG seats fall under the All India General category, while 73 UG seats and 38 PG seats come under the Maharashtra state reserved category.
The state-level breakup for UG and PG seats, in that order, is: Scheduled Caste 13 per cent (13, 7), Scheduled Tribe 7 per cent (7, 4), Denotified Tribes Vimukta Jatis A 3 per cent (3, 2), Nomadic Tribes B 2.5 per cent (3, 1), Nomadic Tribes C 3.5 per cent (4, 2), Nomadic Tribes D 2 per cent (2, 1), Specially Backward Class 2 per cent (2, 1), Other Backward Class 19 per cent (19, 10), Economically Weaker Section 10 per cent (10, 5) and Socially and Educationally Backward Classes 10 per cent (10, 5).
Horizontal reservations run across categories: 30 per cent of seats for women, 5 per cent for specially abled candidates, and 5 per cent for wards of ex-servicemen or defence personnel. For the LLM programme, each specialisation has a maximum intake of 20 candidates, with seats allotted on merit, candidate preference and availability.
How to update your reservation category
Open the official Consortium portal and log into your CLAT account. Click “Edit Application Form” on the dashboard, then move to the “Reservations” tab. In the MNLU Mumbai field, answer the question about Maharashtra domicile, select the specific category using the checkboxes, and click Save/Submit.
If the edit does not save or the new categories do not appear, write to clat@consortiumofnlus.ac.in or call 080-47162020 between 10 am and 5 pm on working days. Do not wait until October 31: the same date is also the last day for CLAT 2027 registration, and the portal slows down in the final rush. CLAT 2027 is scheduled for December 6, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM, in offline mode. Our admission documents checklist covers the scans to keep ready before counselling.
