Today is the last day to apply. The University of Madras closes admission to its distance-education programmes for the 2026-27 academic year on October 13, 2026, and a university official has confirmed there is no extension beyond this date.
Anyone still planning to apply should finish the online form on the institute’s official admission portal before the window closes. Admission is merit based, with no entrance test.
A new name, eight cancelled courses
The 2026-27 session has been a rough one for the university’s distance-education arm. To satisfy the University Grants Commission’s regulations, the university renamed the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) as the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). The name change alone was not enough to secure approval for everything.
The UGC’s Distance Education Bureau withheld approval for eight distance-mode programmes: BA French, BA sociology, MA sociology, Bachelor of Fine Arts, MA journalism, MA Christian studies, BSc geography and MS geography. Admissions to all eight have been stopped for this academic year.
The bureau also raised a deeper concern. It sought clarifications about the institute not having a full-time director and the university not having a full-time controller of examinations. Those gaps, along with the missing name change, were what held up approvals in the first place.
What the lost approvals cost the university
A resolution passed by the university’s syndicate puts a number on the damage. The eight axed programmes had brought in Rs 70 lakh as tuition fees in 2025-26, and the university will feel that loss.
There is more at stake. Approval for the MBA and MCA programmes offered in the distance mode runs out in January 2027. The syndicate warned that if these approvals are not renewed, the university faces a recurring financial loss on top of the disruption for students already enrolled.
The response so far has been to advertise for the missing posts. The syndicate decided to call for applications for controller of examinations, director of the institute of distance education and dean of the college development council. Once appointments are made, the university plans to apply again to the UGC for permission to run the affected programmes.
What students can still apply for today
The cuts have not shut down the operation. The institute still runs 57 UGC DEB-approved programmes: 12 undergraduate, 10 postgraduate, 19 diploma and 16 certificate courses. Popular options include BA, BCom, BBA, BCA, MA, MCom and MSc in several specialisations.
UG course fees start at around Rs 3,200 a year, and the online application fee is Rs 224. More than 20,000 students are currently enrolled in the distance mode. Applications close at the end of today, so keep your documents ready before you start the form.
Looking ahead, the university plans to launch eight online courses, including BBA, BCom and BA French. If you are weighing distance study against other options, read our guide on how to choose a university in India and check our admission documents checklist so nothing delays your form.
