A rank of 1,373 was the last one that got into computer science at NIT Tiruchirappalli in JoSAA 2026. That Round 5 closing rank, for general category candidates under the other-state quota, is the tightest among the top 10 NITs. The round-wise data, published by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, shows what it actually took to enter the most sought-after NIT branches this year.
The ranks below are for the general category, other-state quota, open seats. JoSAA allots NIT seats in two quotas: home-state seats for candidates from the state where the institute sits, and other-state seats for everyone else. Home-state cutoffs are usually looser. At Trichy, for example, CSE closed at 4,015 for home-state candidates against 1,373 for other-state candidates. Anyone reading these numbers should check which quota they fall under before comparing their own rank.
The top three NITs
Trichy stays the hardest NIT to enter. Its CSE branch opened at rank 103 in Round 1 and closed at 1,373 in Round 5, while electronics and communication engineering (ECE) moved from 1,819 to 3,285. NIT Karnataka, Surathkal comes next: CSE opened at 678 and closed at 1,954, and ECE closed at 3,947 after opening at 1,330.
NIT Warangal takes third place, and its numbers moved the least. CSE opened at 1,998 and closed at 2,581, a shift of under 600 ranks across five rounds, which means most of its CSE seats were taken in the earliest rounds. ECE at Warangal closed at 4,623 after opening at 3,779.
The rest of the top 10
The gap widens quickly below the top three. NIT Rourkela CSE closed at 4,266, and MNNIT Allahabad CSE at 5,375. NIT Calicut CSE closed at 5,769, MNIT Jaipur at 5,868, VNIT Nagpur at 7,419, NIT Kurukshetra at 8,701 and NIT Durgapur at 12,281. ECE cutoffs ran looser at every institute, stretching to 16,370 at Durgapur.
| Institute | CSE closing rank | ECE closing rank |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Tiruchirappalli | 1,373 | 3,285 |
| NIT Karnataka (Surathkal) | 1,954 | 3,947 |
| NIT Warangal | 2,581 | 4,623 |
| NIT Rourkela | 4,266 | 5,456 |
| MNNIT Allahabad | 5,375 | 8,904 |
| NIT Calicut | 5,769 | 8,179 |
| MNIT Jaipur | 5,868 | 9,309 |
| VNIT Nagpur | 7,419 | 11,029 |
| NIT Kurukshetra | 8,701 | 13,924 |
| NIT Durgapur | 12,281 | 16,370 |
What this means for JEE Main 2027 aspirants
Treat these closing ranks as a planning aid. Cutoffs shift every year with the difficulty of the JEE Main paper, the number of seats and how candidates order their choices. A rank near 13,000 still secured CSE at Durgapur this year, while the same rank would have fallen short of ECE at Kurukshetra. Choice filling order matters as much as the rank: a wrongly ordered list can cost a seat the rank would have earned.
