Engineering aspirants watching the calendar now have a date to plan around. JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is set for January 22 to 30, 2027, and the National Testing Agency is expected to open registration for it in late October 2026. The NTA has not confirmed the exact dates yet, but last year’s Session 1 window opened on October 31.

Session dates, already announced

The NTA published its exam calendar earlier this month. Session 1 will run on January 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30, 2027, with January 31 kept as a buffer day. Session 2 is expected in April 2027, and its registration is likely to open in February 2027.

When the window goes live, the application will be available only on the official JEE Main website. Both the NTA and education portals warn candidates not to trust any other website claiming to host the form.

Who can apply

Candidates who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing for it in 2027, are expected to be eligible, and there is no upper age limit.

Appearing in the exam is not the same as getting into an NIT, though. For admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions, candidates need at least 75% in Class 12 or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board. For SC and ST candidates, the qualifying mark is 65%. The fine print will be in the NTA’s information bulletin, which is expected soon.

Documents to keep ready

Keep this paperwork ready before the form opens:

  • A recent passport-size photograph (10 KB to 200 KB, 3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • A scanned signature (10 KB to 100 KB, 3.5 x 1.5 cm)
  • The Class 10 certificate or marksheet, used to verify name and date of birth
  • A valid identity document
  • Category or PwD certificates, where applicable
  • An active mobile number and email ID, which must stay the same till the result

One detail is worth sorting before the form opens. The name and date of birth on the form should match the Aadhaar card and Class 10 certificate, and any mismatch has to be corrected before submission. Our admission documents checklist covers the standard paperwork for any entrance application.

What it costs

The fee is expected to follow last year’s brochure: Rs 1,000 for unreserved male candidates, Rs 800 for unreserved female candidates, Rs 900 for Gen-EWS and OBC-NCL male candidates (Rs 800 for female candidates in those categories), and Rs 500 for SC, ST, PwD and transgender candidates.

The exam itself

Paper 1, for BE and BTech admissions, has 75 questions for 300 marks: 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value questions each in physics, chemistry and mathematics. A correct answer earns four marks, a wrong one loses one, and unanswered questions carry no marks.

The exam runs in 13 languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Urdu. Those targeting NITs like the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli will use their Session 1 scores for the seat-allocation process that follows.
