Three students ranked in the top 50 of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination chose Jadavpur University for BTech this year. Last year, not one top-50 rank-holder did.
The Times of India reported the turnaround on November 1, after the university closed its admission process. The best-ranked student among this year’s admission-takers held rank 18, and opted for civil engineering. Top rank-holders showed interest in most of its 16 engineering departments, the report said.
Opening ranks improved in every major branch
The opening rank is the rank of the first student admitted to a branch, so a lower number means a stronger intake. On that measure, Jadavpur improved across the board compared with 2025.
| Branch | Opening rank 2026 | Opening rank 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Information technology | 31 | 295 |
| Computer science and engineering | 37 | 83 |
| Electronics and telecommunication | 92 | 274 |
| Electrical engineering | 345 | 554 |
| Mechanical engineering | 523 | 833 |
| Chemical engineering | 782 | 1,226 |
The sharpest jump came in information technology, from 295 to 31. Computer science opened at 37 against 83 last year, and electrical and mechanical engineering each improved by more than 200 places.
An early start made the difference
A senior professor put the improvement down to timing: counselling started in May and June this year, while last year OBC reservation complications pushed centralised counselling to around September, by which time many strong candidates had already taken seats elsewhere.
The delay left its mark. After several rounds of counselling by the WBJEE board ended in early October, Jadavpur still had 182 vacant BTech seats out of 1,190. The university then ran its own decentralised counselling and spot admission between October 28 and 30, and sources told The Times of India that all the seats were filled in that round.
The Telegraph had earlier reported a 12,000 cut-off for general-category candidates in that round. Vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee had said calling candidates ranked that low was not good for the institute, and that classes beginning on October 12 left late joiners struggling to catch up.
The caveat professors are still raising
Another professor told The Times of India that closing ranks in some departments ended up much the same as last year, because procedural delays by the WBJEE board slowed the rounds. Computer science professor Diganta Saha said his department took in better-ranked students than last year, with both opening and closing ranks improving, but added that faster counselling could have brought in even stronger candidates.
The timing gap with the IITs and NITs remains the sore point. Those institutes started classes in July, while Jadavpur’s BTech classes began in late October. For students weighing Jadavpur against other options next year, the point is plain: the university can still attract top ranks, but only if admissions move fast enough to keep them. Our guide on how to choose a university in India explains how to weigh a strong department against a delayed academic calendar, and the admission documents checklist covers what to keep ready for spot rounds.
WBJEE counselling notices are published on the official WBJEEB portal, and Jadavpur’s own notices on the official JU engineering admission portal.
