Jadavpur University has started its own counselling to fill 182 BTech seats that stayed empty after several rounds of counselling by the state Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) board. Why Jadavpur is counselling on its own
The state government permitted Jadavpur University and the University of Calcutta on October 13 to conduct their own counselling for seats left vacant after the centralised process. Jadavpur had asked for that permission in March, soon after the state JEE results were announced, so it could admit students without waiting for the board’s rounds to end.
Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee has said the delay is already costing the university students. BTech classes at Jadavpur began on October 12, well after classes started at the IITs and NITs, and he cited a candidate who took admission at KIIT in Odisha instead of waiting for Jadavpur’s counselling. That student, he said, had already finished the mid-term at KIIT. “If you hold delayed counselling, you are bound to get students from lower down the rank. This is not a healthy sign for an institute,” Bhattacharjee said.
Students who join through this round will start classes in November, weeks behind their classmates. The vice-chancellor has said they will struggle to cope with the syllabus, and that the university will raise the matter with the state government again so it can hold independent counselling immediately after the JEE results in future years.
The timeline so far
Jadavpur opened applications for its decentralised counselling on October 15, with the window closing on October 23. A provisional applicant list was published on October 24, grievances were accepted until 6 pm on October 25, and the final applicant list came out on October 26. Document verification and spot admission were scheduled for October 28 to 31 at the TEQIP Building on campus, under the schedule published earlier in October.
All participating institutes in the state have been told to complete admissions for the 2026 session by October 31, so candidates in this round have only days to finish the process. Calcutta University is running a parallel round
Calcutta University is conducting its own counselling on October 30 and 31 to fill 148 vacant BTech seats. Its application window closed at 2 pm on October 27, and its merit list was due on October 28. Candidates who could not apply online were allowed to submit a physical application at Rajabazar Science College.
The two universities together account for more than 300 vacant engineering seats, a sign of how many places the board-run rounds left unfilled this year. For students still without a seat, these campus-level rounds are the last window before admissions close on October 31.
