Two of West Bengal’s oldest state universities are taking BTech admissions into their own hands. Jadavpur University will run its own counselling from October 28 to 31 to fill 140 vacant BTech seats, and the University of Calcutta will hold its independent counselling on October 30 and 31 for 148 seats. The schedules were announced on Tuesday, two days after the state government let institutions counsel themselves for seats the JEE board’s rounds could not fill.
How many seats are still empty
The vacancies are a small slice of each intake. Jadavpur has 1,193 BTech seats, with about 140 unfilled. Calcutta University has 482 seats, with more than 140 left vacant. Across West Bengal the problem runs much wider: roughly 21,000 of 48,683 BTech seats are still empty, which is why the higher education department has pushed the final admission decision down to the campuses.
The deadlines you cannot miss
Jadavpur’s application window is already open and closes on October 23 at 11:00 am; the university will counsel over four days starting October 28. Calcutta University will accept applications until October 27 at 2:00 pm, ahead of its two-day counselling on October 30 and 31. The state has fixed October 31 as the hard stop for all BTech admissions this year, with verification by November 2, and the higher education department has said there will be no extension. Keep your admission documents checklist ready, because everything has to finish in under two weeks.
Why the universities want to counsel themselves
Jadavpur’s vice-chancellor, Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, made no secret of his frustration. BTech classes at JU began on October 12, and students admitted in the late-October round will start classes only in November. Bhattacharjee fears they will struggle to cope, and added that classes should begin in July anyway, since the IITs and NITs start well before the state universities.
Jadavpur had asked for this earlier. The university wrote to the state government in March, seeking permission to run its own counselling immediately after the JEE results, outside the board-run centralised process. The idea was to hold on to meritorious students who refuse to wait months for centralised counselling and take admission elsewhere to start classes early. The BJP government, which came to power in early May, denied the request in June and asked the university to rely on the JEE board’s process. Bhattacharjee says JU will raise the demand again, so it can admit students right after the JEE results next year and start classes early.
At Calcutta University, a professor noted that even the JEE board’s two supervised decentralised rounds this year, meant to keep a watch on how vacant seats were filled, left seats vacant anyway.
What to watch next
Admissions in these rounds are strictly on WBJEE 2026 merit ranks, individual preferences and seat availability, so your rank sheet and documents decide everything. Watch the counselling notices on each university’s website and the WBJEE board portal for the merit lists; both universities have only a few days between the application deadline and the first counselling day.
