The application window opened today and closes at 5 pm on October 30. That gives research aspirants less than three weeks to apply for the joint PhD degree programme run by IIT Mandi and IIT Jammu, which will admit scholars for the January to May 2027 session.
One PhD, two IITs
The programme awards a single doctoral degree issued jointly by both institutes. Scholars work with supervisors from IIT Mandi and IIT Jammu and get access to the research facilities of each. The design combines the research experience, academic resources and facilities of the two institutes around interdisciplinary projects. Each advertised project names its home institution, its host institution, the supervisor and the department or centre involved.
Admissions are managed by a joint admissions subcommittee formed by the two institutes, and candidates must meet the PhD requirements of both. The institutes have listed projects across engineering, materials science and electronics, alongside social sciences.
The projects on offer
Research themes advertised for this session include financial inclusion and rural development in agriculture; radiation-hard in-memory computing for edge devices; computational approaches to fracture in advanced functional materials; and hardware for wideband spectrum sensing and sustainable spectrum use. The mix of engineering topics and development-focused social science projects shows the direction the two institutes want the joint programme to take.
Candidates apply against the published project list, so the choice of supervisor and project is settled up front. Read the project descriptions carefully before applying. They spell out which institute is the home base and which is the host, which determines where much of the day-to-day research will happen.
Eligibility and selection
The official admission page says eligibility for the joint programme matches the regular PhD rules of each institute. Selection is through a written test and/or an interview, run by the joint admissions subcommittee. The PhD ordinances of the two institutes apply.
With less than three weeks between opening and closing, candidates who already know which project they want and have their documents ready have the easier path. Keep everything scanned in the formats the portal asks for before you sit down to apply; our admission documents checklist covers the usual pitfalls.
