Applicants for postgraduate study at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur have until 2 pm on November 3, 2026, to submit their forms. The window covers admission to the January 2027 semester, listed by the institute as the 2026-27 second semester, and it closes at that hour for Indian and foreign-national applicants alike.
The portal opened on October 16, 2026. Applications are online only, and a separate form is needed for each programme or department. Anyone applying to more than one department should plan for that extra form and fee rather than assuming one submission covers several choices.
What is open
MS by Research is open in Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Intelligent Systems, Mechanical Engineering, and Photonics Science and Engineering. A separate MS by Research in Cybersecurity is open only for sponsored, part-time and external candidates, and it carries no financial assistantship.
PhD applications cover a much longer department list. It includes Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio-Engineering, Chemistry, Design, Economics, Earth Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Data Science, Sustainable Energy Engineering, and Space, Planetary and Astronomical Sciences and Engineering, along with the engineering departments named for MS by Research. The exact degree, marks, test and fellowship rule for a programme sits with the department, so the department page matters more than any general summary.
Who can apply, and what it costs
Final-year students can apply if they are likely to finish their qualifying programme by January 4, 2027. Their admission stays provisional until they meet the final degree requirements. Reservations for EWS, SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer and DAP candidates apply under Government of India norms.
People working in industry or at a college, university or institute can apply as sponsored, external or part-time candidates. The November 3 deadline at 2 pm applies to those categories too, and foreign-national applications close at the same time. Institute assistantship or scholarship is provided to non-sponsored PhD and MS by Research students, subject to the applicable rules.
The application fee is Rs 500 for General, EWS, OBC and OBC-NCL candidates and Rs 250 for SC, ST and DAP candidates. Foreign-national candidates do not pay the fee. The fee is non-refundable, so it is worth checking the department eligibility page and the documents in the admission documents checklist before paying.
Two things to check before you submit
In-campus accommodation may not be available when a newly admitted student accepts the offer. The institute says house rent allowance may be provided under the rules, and students will be given an option for in-campus accommodation when a place becomes available. Applicants who are counting on a hostel room from day one should read that line carefully.
The withdrawal terms are also fixed in advance. A withdrawal received by December 13, 2026, carries a Rs 2,500 deduction. After that date, the deduction will be at least 25 percent of the total fees paid, provided the candidate has not joined the institute. Refund processing will be taken up after January 18, 2027, and may take up to 21 working days. Applicants can find the programme list, department links and the apply-online page on the official IIT Kanpur PG admissions page.
