One billion dollars, and nearly half of it is already committed. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur launched “Greater Than Us”, its fundraising campaign, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on October 14, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh doing the launch.
The target is US$1 billion (about Rs 9,000 crore) by March 2029. Director Manindra Agrawal told reporters that Rs 4,155 crore has already been pledged by alumni, corporate donors, the government and other partners. “No IIT has attempted a campaign at this scale, with almost half the target already committed,” he said, making it the largest fundraising drive ever attempted by an IIT.
A startup school for the Noida campus
The launch day’s biggest single commitment came from alumnus Rahul Gautam: Rs 180 crore to establish the Gautam School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (G-SINE) at the institute’s Noida campus. IIT Kanpur signed the memorandum of understanding at the launch itself.
G-SINE will train students to take research out of the lab and into the market. It gets its own full-time faculty and its own degree programmes. The flagship is an MBA in Technology and Entrepreneurship, scheduled to begin in July 2027, focused on AI, cybersecurity, digital health, biotechnology, drones and advanced manufacturing. The school will work alongside a proposed Deep Tech Hub at the Noida campus, and will draw on the institute’s Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC), which has incubated 571 startups.
Where the money goes
The campaign has three pillars. Foundation, with a Rs 5,000-crore target, covers research and institutional infrastructure: a Rs 524-crore Central Research Facility with a semiconductor and device processing centre (including a clean room), a Rs 200-crore high-performance computing facility with advanced GPUs, four 1,000-bed student hostels (the first expected by June 2027), 96 faculty apartments and a Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing.
Talent, with a Rs 3,000-crore target, pays for scholarships, doctoral fellowships, faculty chairs and visiting faculty. Our guide to scholarships for Indian university students explains how such aid typically works.
Frontier, the Rs 1,000-crore research pillar, has already overshot its target: Rs 1,556 crore is committed for work in quantum technology, semiconductor packaging, medical-device development and drug discovery.
The money supports seven strategic areas: AI, cybersecurity, drones, medical technology, sustainability, semiconductors and quantum technologies.
A second big gift, and a defence angle
IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal, another IIT Kanpur alumnus, has taken his total giving to Rs 400 crore for the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. He contributed Rs 100 crore in 2022 and another Rs 300 crore earlier this year, which HT’s report from the launch described as the largest single alumni contribution in the institute’s history.
Singh, at the launch, also welcomed the institute’s proposal for a school of defence technology and indigenous defence solutions. Agrawal said IIT Kanpur is working with the Ministry of Defence on a drone hub focused on defence applications, aimed at indigenising critical components that are currently imported.
Agrawal said the campaign grew out of a strategic plan the institute drew up three years ago to build the infrastructure and talent for indigenous technologies. “India cannot borrow the technologies that will define its future. We have to build them,” he said.
