Diagnostics made in India, priced for India. That is the promise behind a new partnership Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur struck with the Gates Foundation, announced as the third edition of the institute’s Samanvay summit wrapped up this week at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The partnership will focus on locally developed, affordable diagnostics. The two sides plan to bring together engineering, biotechnology and artificial intelligence to build faster, more accessible tests for underserved communities, according to the announcement made at the summit.

Samanvay is IIT Kanpur’s flagship Industry-Academia and Innovation Summit, a platform where companies, policymakers and researchers meet to turn research into products. The 2026 edition drew leaders from industry, government and academia, with sessions on emerging technologies, healthcare innovation and technology for social good, as listed on the official IITK Samanvay 2026 page.

The chief guest’s pitch

The chief guest was Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences. He called Samanvay a commendable effort to bring academia, research and industry onto a single platform, and said that if the next industrial revolution is driven by biotechnology, quantum and AI, then “India is already there.”

His condition for that to happen: partnerships that endure. He argued that moving ideas “from lab to land and from prototype to product” needs sustained collaboration, and that platforms like Samanvay have a part to play in the road to Viksit Bharat 2047.

What the two partners said

IIT Kanpur director Prof Manindra Agrawal kept the focus on outcomes. “A major task of academic institutions is to translate scientific knowledge into solutions that improve lives,” he said, describing the Gates Foundation partnership as part of an innovation ecosystem that connects research, entrepreneurship and industry.

For the Gates Foundation, India country director Archna Vyas said the country’s “scientific talent, engineering excellence and manufacturing capabilities can help expand access to affordable, high-quality health technologies across India and the Global South.” The aim, she said, is to translate promising science into practical health solutions and support a more self-reliant health innovation ecosystem.

A campaign with deep pockets behind it

The announcement comes days after IIT Kanpur unveiled its US$1 billion Greater Than Us campaign for research infrastructure, talent and strategic technologies. Nearly half the target, Rs 4,155 crore, is already committed by alumni, donors, corporate partners and the government, the institute said at the launch.

The diagnostics partnership fits the medical side of that campaign. At the campaign launch, the institute flagged medical-device development as a priority area, noting that India imports most of its high-end medical devices, and a research partnership aimed at homegrown diagnostics lands squarely in that gap.

Why students should care

Partnerships of this kind usually create research openings before they create headlines. Institutes with active industry and philanthropy tie-ups tend to offer more funded projects, lab roles and startup exposure to undergraduates and postgraduates. For applicants comparing institutes, research partnerships like this one are a useful signal.
