Tomorrow, October 29, IIT Kanpur opens the gates for the 61st edition of Antaragni, its annual cultural festival. The four-day event runs until November 1 and is expected to draw students from more than 350 colleges and universities across India. It is one of the oldest college festivals in the country: the event began in 1965 and has run almost every year since, growing from an inter-college gathering into a fixture on the national student calendar.

The competitive core of the festival is large. Antaragni 2026 hosts over 50 competitions across 12 categories. Music contests include Antaragni Idol and Synchronicity, the band competition, along with Junoon and Pair on Stage. Dance events include Jitterbug and Estampie, and theatre students compete in Nukkad Natak, stage plays and mono acts. The programme also covers anime, street theatre, debates and quizzes, fine arts, Hindi and English literary events, and film and photography contests. Ritambhara, the festival’s fashion show, closes the competitive lineup, with Mr and Miss Antaragni titles awarded alongside it.

Evenings at Antaragni have their own draw. Star nights, electronic dance music sets and rock band performances run under the Synchronicity banner, and past editions have pulled large crowds to the main ground after the day’s competitions end. For many visiting students, those nights are the part they remember, but the competitions are where most of the travelling teams spend their time.

A student-run festival on a large scale

Antaragni is organised by IIT Kanpur students, with a core team working through the year on events, logistics and sponsorship. That student-run character is part of why the festival has lasted six decades: each batch hands the event to the next, and the format changes a little with every edition while the competitive structure stays in place. Colleges from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana and the Kolkata and Mumbai circuits regularly send teams, and the four days double as a meeting point for students who compete against each other through the rest of the year.

Students planning to attend should check the official Antaragni website for the event schedule and participation details, since timings and venues for individual competitions are set by the organising team. Teams travelling to Kanpur need to sort out their own stay and travel, and should confirm their event slots before leaving, as popular competitions fill their team lists early.

Campus festivals also tell prospective students something useful about a college. The range of clubs, the scale of student organisation and the crowds a fest draws all say something about campus life that a brochure does not. Our guide to choosing a university in India sets out how to weigh factors like these alongside academics, fees and placements when shortlisting colleges.

Antaragni 2026 opens on October 29 and runs through November 1 at IIT Kanpur, with competitions, performances and the fashion show spread across the four days.
