For a Class 12 student in Leh who wants to study at an IIT or an IIM, the answer has always meant leaving home. Board a flight or a long bus ride to Jammu or Delhi, pay for a hostel, and start over in a new city. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that may soon change, at least for some students.
Speaking virtually on October 15, Modi inaugurated five development projects in Ladakh worth around Rs 3,350 crore and said proposals to establish satellite campuses of IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu are being advanced. Through these centres, he said, Ladakhi youth would get better opportunities for higher education, research and new skills in their own region. He also announced a major centre of excellence being established in Leh, aimed at giving Ladakhi youth quality education and access to new technologies so they do not have to depend on other cities.
The IIM Jammu campus is already taking shape
The IIM Jammu piece of the plan is the more concrete one. On September 25, the Ladakh administration and IIM Jammu signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the institute’s satellite campus at Leh, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
The campus will run a four-year, residential BBA (Honours) programme with an intake of about 60 students. Classes for the first batch are scheduled to begin this October. Around 600 candidates have expressed interest in the 60 seats, according to officials.
Admission follows IIM Jammu’s 2026-30 admission policy: JIPMAT 2026, the CUET General Aptitude Test, or JEE Main 2026 scores, plus Class 10 and 12 marks and gender diversity. Students should track the official BBA (Hons) admission policy on the IIM Jammu website for updates.
What about the IIT Jammu campus?
Less is confirmed there. Modi described both campuses as proposals being advanced, and no programme or admission details have been announced for the IIT Jammu side yet, so there is nothing to apply to right now.
The Indian Institute of Technology Jammu opened in 2016. A Leh campus would give Ladakhi JEE aspirants the same reason to stay closer to home that management aspirants now have. Our guide on choosing a university in India can help students weighing their options.
Why this matters for Ladakh’s students
Modi’s pitch was that students from the Union Territory have long had to move outside it for quality professional education, paying for travel, accommodation, food and books on top of fees. Bringing an IIM campus to Leh removes at least part of that burden. The programme is residential, with students moving between the Leh and Jammu campuses depending on the season under the institute’s academic calendar.
The other projects Modi launched
The five projects inaugurated alongside the education announcement are worth around Rs 3,350 crore: a new Rs 640-crore passenger terminal at Leh’s Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, the 298-km Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road, a 9-MW Hanu small hydroelectric project with transmission lines, plus India’s first petroglyph conservation park.
None of the campus proposals has been formally inaugurated yet. What is real is the MoU and the BBA batch starting this month.
