The clock is running out for MSc aspirants. Today, October 22, is the last day to register for the IIT Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2027, after IIT Kharagpur, the organising institute, pushed the deadline back from October 19. Applications close on the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS), and the window will not reopen for anyone who misses it.

JAM 2027 is the single gateway to 89 postgraduate programmes across 23 IITs for the 2027-28 academic session. That includes MSc, MSc-PhD, Joint MSc-PhD, PhD dual degree and Integrated PhD programmes, which is why the deadline matters to science graduates across the country.

The extension added only a few days to the schedule, and this is where the calendar stands. The computer-based examination will be held on February 14, 2027, in two sessions. The forenoon session, from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, covers Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics. The afternoon session, from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm, covers Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. The result is scheduled for March 18, 2027.

Fees, eligibility and the two-paper rule

The fee depends on category and on whether you take one paper or two. Candidates in the general, OBC and EWS categories pay Rs 2,000 for one paper and Rs 2,700 for two. Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates pay Rs 1,000 for one paper and Rs 1,350 for two papers.

Anyone who has completed an undergraduate degree, or is appearing in the final examination of the qualifying degree in 2027, can apply. There is no age restriction. Qualifying in JAM does not automatically guarantee admission to every programme, so candidates should check the programme-specific eligibility of the IITs they want.

If you are attempting two papers, they must fall in different sessions. You cannot pick two papers scheduled at the same time.

How to apply on JOAPS today

Register on the official JAM portal with your email ID and mobile number, then fill in personal, academic and category details. Select your test paper or papers and three exam cities in order of preference. Upload your photograph, signature and Class 10 marksheet, plus category or PwD certificates where they apply. Pay the fee online and download the final confirmation receipt.

Double-check every field before submitting. A paid data-correction window is tentatively scheduled to open on November 10, 2026, but corrections are limited and may attract a change fee. Keep the documents listed in our admission documents checklist ready, and note that money debited without a JOAPS payment confirmation does not count as an application.
