The window for IIT JAM 2027 is closing in about three days. Registration for the Joint Admission Test for Masters, the entrance exam for postgraduate science programmes at the IITs, shuts on October 19, 2026, and IIT Kharagpur, which is organising this year’s exam, has not announced any extension.
Applications run through the JOAPS portal on the official JAM 2027 website. The registration window opened on September 11. With no word of an extension, anyone who misses the October 19 deadline will have to wait for the next cycle.
What the exam covers
JAM is the common entrance test for MSc, Joint MSc-PhD and other postgraduate science programmes at the IITs. The 2027 edition has seven test papers: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. Candidates can take one or two papers, as long as the two fall in different sessions.
The exam is scheduled for Sunday, February 14, 2027, in computer-based mode. There are two sessions: the forenoon session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and the afternoon session from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. If you pick two papers, they must fall in different sessions. Choose your papers and exam cities carefully before paying: CareerIndia notes that the portal teams flag document defects by email or SMS, but requests to change a paper or city later are not assured.
Fees and documents
For one test paper, the application fee is Rs 1,000 for female candidates and candidates in the SC, ST and PwD categories, and Rs 2,000 for all others. Choosing two papers raises the fee to Rs 1,350 for the first group and Rs 2,700 for others.
Before starting the form, keep these documents ready: your Class 10 marksheet or certificate as date-of-birth proof, a recent passport-size photograph, a scanned signature in black or blue ink, and your category certificate if you are claiming a reservation. Shiksha notes the photo and signature must meet the portal’s size and format specifications, or the form will not upload. Our admission documents checklist walks through what each document needs to look like before an online application.
Two practical points from today’s reporting. CareerIndia advises capturing the transaction reference and watching your email and SMS for a payment confirmation, because a draft or a failed payment does not complete the application. And an application correction window is expected around November 10, 2026, though IIT Kharagpur is yet to confirm the dates.
