The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has moved up 19 places to 251st in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, from 270th in the previous edition. The share of ranked institutions it finished ahead of rose from 82.5 percent to 85.5 percent.

The 2027 edition assessed more than 1,700 universities across 26 higher education systems, including 325 institutions from India. IIT Delhi remained the highest ranked Indian institution at 66th in Asia, even though it slipped from 59th last year. Against that background, a 19 place climb put IIT Hyderabad among the clear gainers from India.

What pushed IIT Hyderabad up

Research did most of the work. The institute’s QS rankings coordinator, Saurabh Shandilya, said the biggest gains came from an increase in research papers published per faculty member and in citations received per paper. IIT Hyderabad placed 30th in Asia on papers per faculty member and 41st for staff members holding PhDs.

Faculty qualifications also improved, and the institute’s standing among academics and employers went up, according to the QS report summary. Director Prof. B. S. Murty said the improvement came from sustained work by faculty, students, researchers and staff. The institute’s global QS rank is 588.

For students, the research numbers matter more than the headline rank. Papers per faculty member is a rough proxy for how active the teaching staff is in research, and it is one reason a relatively young IIT, set up in 2008, keeps moving up a list dominated by much older institutions.

The Telangana picture is mixed

The University of Hyderabad kept a top 300 place at 270th in Asia and 55th in Southern Asia, but that was down from 246th last year. One part of its score did improve: it moved up 11 places in academic reputation to 165th in Asia, and it finished ahead of 84.4 percent of the ranked institutions.

NIT Warangal had a better week, climbing to 624th from the 771-780 band. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad entered the rankings for the first time, in the 1201-1300 band. Put together, Telangana has three institutions in the top 650 and a fourth that has just joined the list, which is a useful starting point for students comparing options in the state.

How to read a ranking like this

The QS Asia rankings weigh academic reputation, employer reputation, research output and impact, faculty resources and international engagement. A single edition can move on a small change in any one of those scores, so a rank is best treated as one signal among several. Our guide to rankings in India explains what the major lists measure and where they disagree.

Students comparing institutes should weigh the course and department first, then faculty strength, fees, location and placement record, before the overall rank. Our guide on how to choose a university in India walks through that order. The full QS Asia 2027 list and IIT Hyderabad’s own announcements are available through the official IIT Hyderabad website.
