Students in Assam and the Northeast may soon be able to train in semiconductor packaging close to home. The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has signed an agreement with Tata Electronics to build a Centre of Excellence in semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging, known as ATMP, on its campus.
The memorandum of understanding was formalised on October 23, 2026, between Prof. Rohit Sinha, the institute’s dean of research and development, and Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, chief human resources officer at Tata Electronics. IIT Guwahati announced the deal on October 30.
Diploma and BTech programmes with shop-floor training
Under the agreement, IIT Guwahati will lead the design and delivery of the teaching. That covers diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programmes in ATMP, with practical, hands-on training written into the curriculum from the start.
Packaging is the stage where a finished chip is assembled, tested and prepared for use in a device. It is also the part of the semiconductor chain where India is building capacity fastest, and it needs technicians and engineers who have actually handled the equipment.
The reach goes beyond one campus
The centre is meant to serve more than IIT Guwahati alone. The two partners will identify engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics across Assam and the Northeast and bring them into the programme. They will develop course content, teaching material and specialised training programmes together, and train faculty members from the participating institutions so the teaching holds up outside Guwahati.
Students from partner institutions will get hands-on training opportunities, including training at Tata Electronics itself. Undergraduate and postgraduate students will also be able to take up joint research in semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and related technologies.
IIT Guwahati director Devendra Jalihal said the aim is to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research, and to broaden access to this kind of technical education across Assam.
What students should watch next
The announcement does not give start dates, seat numbers or admission details for the new programmes, so students should wait for IIT Guwahati to publish those before making plans. The institute’s own announcement is the reliable place to check: the official IIT Guwahati newsletter post carries the full details of the agreement. Our guide to choosing a university in India explains how to weigh a new, industry-linked programme against established branches before committing.
For students in the Northeast, the practical point is simple. A field that used to mean moving to a handful of industrial hubs is getting a training base in the region itself, with a direct line to one of the companies building India’s semiconductor capacity.
