Final-year students at the IITs, IISc, NITs and IISERs have nine days left to apply for a semester of funded research at IIT Gandhinagar. Applications for the institute’s Visiting Students Research Engagement Programme (VSREP) 2026-27 close on October 27 at 5 pm IST.
Under VSREP, selected students spend a full semester at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar working on a research project with an IITGN faculty member. They register for IN 497, the Research Engagement course, and earn academic credits for the work. Unlike a typical two-month summer internship, this one runs through the whole of Semester II of the 2026-27 academic year, from January 2 to April 30, 2027.
Who can apply
The programme is open to two groups. The first covers final-year students in the four-year BTech and BS programmes and the five-year integrated master’s programmes at the IITs and IISc. The second covers final-year students in the BTech, BS and five-year BS-MS programmes at NITs and IISERs.
Every applicant must have more than 8.0 CPI or CGPA at the end of their pre-final year. The institute’s page phrases it that way deliberately, so a score of exactly 8.0 does not clear the bar.
Credits and the stipend
Research Engagement is offered in four-credit modules. Students can earn up to four credits in one quad, and up to 16 credits of IN 497 across the stay, with the host department awarding a letter grade at the end of each quad.
The money works in quads too. Students get ₹5,000 for every quad in which they earn a grade of B or above in IN 497. There is no tuition fee for registering in the course, but hostel and mess charges go on the student’s bill. So the stipend is tied to performance rather than being a flat payout for showing up.
How to apply
Applications are through the official form at tiny.cc/VSREP, and the portal closes on October 27 at 5 pm IST. The application window opened on October 6. Read the official VSREP page for the full eligibility list and the course details before you submit. Our admission documents checklist covers the paperwork Indian universities usually ask for, so it is worth keeping your marksheets and certificates ready before the deadline.
