International students eyeing IIT Gandhinagar have three extra days. The institute has pushed its international admissions deadline to October 28, 2026, for the semester that starts in January 2027. Reports last week listed October 25 as the last date, but the institute’s admissions page now shows the extended date, and orientation is set to begin on December 18, 2026.
The window covers full-time MTech and PhD programmes. Foreign students from all backgrounds and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) can apply. Applicants interested in MSc or MA programmes will have to wait: the institute says those programmes will open in the next cycle, scheduled for June 2027.
How to apply
The application runs in two parts, and the order matters. Candidates must first register on the Study in India portal and keep the SII Unique ID it generates. That ID is mandatory for finishing the IIT Gandhinagar application.
After that, candidates apply through the official international admissions portal, filing a separate application for each discipline they want. The institute charges no application fee, asks for no English proficiency scores or certificates, and accepts documents online only. No hard copies are needed at any stage.
Shortlisted candidates are called for a virtual interview or a test. That assessment decides both admission and fellowship eligibility, and successful applicants receive an offer letter stating the fellowship and tuition waiver awarded, if any.
What it costs, and what fellowships pay
IIT Gandhinagar lists fellowships with a monthly stipend and reduced tuition for MTech and PhD students. With a fellowship, academic fees are Rs 50,000 a year, and the monthly stipend is Rs 12,400 for MTech students and Rs 37,000 for PhD students. Living costs are estimated at Rs 1,20,000 a year, and a one-time admission fee plus refundable deposit of Rs 60,000 applies.
Without a fellowship, the academic fee is Rs 2,20,000 a year for students from SAARC countries and Rs 4,00,000 a year for students from other countries. The institute notes that these figures are indicative and can change, so applicants should check the admissions page before paying anything. Students admitted to MTech and PhD programmes must also take credit-bearing courses during the summer term. Winter break enrolment is optional.
What to check before submitting
Apply discipline by discipline, and do not leave the SII Unique ID step for the last day. The portal asks for it before the application can be completed, and a missing ID will stall the form. Save a PDF of the confirmation page once the application goes through: it carries the application number needed for every later query.
Applicants should also read the programme and discipline requirements on the official admissions page before choosing a discipline, since eligibility and selection criteria differ across departments. With the deadline now October 28, candidates still have time to fix documents, but the last day usually brings heavy traffic on admission portals.
