Students and researchers with a fintech idea have until November 12 to enter a national competition that ends with a trip to Gandhinagar. GIFT City has opened the GIFT FutureLab Grand Challenge 2026-27, organised with IIT Gandhinagar, and the winning ideas will be the ones that can actually work inside the financial system.
The challenge runs ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027. Its stated aim is to find research and technology ideas that solve practical problems in financial services, from building new products to improving security and the infrastructure that new technology needs.
Who can enter, and what to build
Entries are open to students and researchers at technical, management and other higher education institutions across India. Applicants can enter on their own or as a team. The organisers are looking for original research and innovations with a clear path to practical use in financial services, rather than ideas that stay on paper.
The announcement lists several indicative areas. These include financial systems built on artificial intelligence, digital assets and programmable finance, and infrastructure ready for quantum computing. Cybersecurity, fraud detection and risk management are in the list, along with regulatory technology and next-generation financial infrastructure. The list is only a guide. Entries outside these areas are welcome as long as they are relevant to financial services and could be put to practical use.
How entries are judged
The first stages of the competition run online. Entries are assessed on novelty, technical merit, and relevance to the financial sector, along with feasibility, potential impact, and prospects for commercialisation. An idea that scores well needs to be new, technically sound, and plausible to build, not just interesting.
Around 10 to 12 shortlisted teams will be invited to IIT Gandhinagar for an in-person Grand Finale, proposed to be held by December 20, 2026. There, finalists will present their work to a jury drawn from academia, technology, financial services, industry, and the GIFT City ecosystem. A team at that stage should be ready to defend both the idea and the plan for building it.
What finalists get beyond the stage
The finale is not the end of the road for the teams that do well. Selected teams may get the chance to work with banks, financial institutions, fintech companies, and other industry partners. Depending on the idea and the partner’s interest, that contact could turn into a pilot project, a research collaboration, product validation, or a commercialisation opportunity. That is the part of the prize that matters most for a student team: a working relationship with an institution that might actually use the product.
The top three teams may also get a slot to present their work at a GIFT City or Vibrant Gujarat platform in January 2027. For teams weighing where to study or build, our guide to choosing a university in India sets out how to judge an institution on factors like industry links and research culture, which are exactly what this challenge tests.
Applications close on November 12, 2026. Teams should use the remaining days to sharpen the problem statement, check that the idea fits a real need in financial services, and line up the evidence that it can be built.
