Twenty days remain for electronics graduates to apply for a funded PhD at Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai. The institute has opened applications for full-time doctoral positions under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme in its Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, and the last date to submit the form is November 25, 2026, at 3 pm.

The scheme is funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to build research capacity in electronics system design and manufacturing. Selected scholars receive Rs 46,250 a month in the first two years and Rs 52,500 a month from the third year to the fifth. Each full-time scholar also gets a research contingency grant of Rs 1.2 lakh a year, house rent reimbursement as per government norms, and support to travel abroad for an international conference. Our guide to scholarships for Indian university students compares other funding options.

What the research covers

IIT Bhilai has listed VLSI, flexible and printed electronics, sensors and sensing technologies, microelectronics, and semiconductor and electronic devices as the thrust areas, along with other closely related fields. Scholars admitted under the scheme will work under Dr Vivek Raghuwanshi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Who can apply

Applicants need a qualifying degree plus one test or experience route. On the degree side, an MTech, MS or equivalent postgraduate degree in electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, microelectronics, engineering physics or a closely related field works, as does a BE or BTech in electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering or engineering physics. A master’s degree in electronics, physics or another relevant science subject also counts. The minimum is first class or 60 per cent marks, relaxed to 55 per cent for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

Alongside the degree, applicants must meet one more condition: a valid GATE score in EC, EE, IN or PH; a CSIR or UGC NET qualification in electronic science or physical sciences; at least two years of relevant teaching or research experience; a master’s in engineering or technology with 60 per cent marks; or a BTech from an IIT with a CGPA of 8.0 or more. Reservations for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and EWS candidates follow government rules.

How to apply

Applications are online only, through the official Visvesvaraya PhD admission page. The application fee is Rs 100 for SC, ST, PwD and female candidates and Rs 200 for others, payable only through State Bank Collect. No hard copy of the form is needed, but the application must be finalised online or it will not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews in the second or third week of December 2026. The interviews will be held offline at IIT Bhilai. Dates for result declaration and registration are not fixed yet, so check the institute website and your email regularly.
