IISER Pune opened online applications for its January 2027 doctoral batch on October 5, according to admissions reports. The institute admits PhD students across Biology, Chemistry, Data Science, Earth and Climate Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. Its Department of Science Education is separately inviting candidates in cognitive sciences, educational psychology, design, anthropology, computer science, and philosophy and history of science, NDTV reports.
Chemistry and Earth and Climate Science: October 21
Both departments stop accepting forms at 5 PM on October 21. Chemistry’s department page asks for a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in a master’s degree in science (55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) and insists on a valid CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF qualification. Earth and Climate Science accepts candidates with valid CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, JEST, INSPIRE-PhD fellowship, or BS-MS students from an Institute of National Importance with a CGPA of 8 or above. The department’s research spans climate science, geology and geophysics.
Humanities and Social Sciences: October 23
The HSS department’s deadline is 5 PM on October 23. It accepts master’s holders across the sciences, humanities and social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, political science, history, archaeology and philosophy, with 60% aggregate marks (55% for SC/ST/PD candidates). Shortlisting is based on the application and a two-page research plan. Only faculty members named on the department’s admissions page are taking students in this round, so applicants should check the list before choosing a supervisor.
Science Education: October 25
The Department of Science Education closes applications on October 25. Applicants need a master’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree with at least 60% aggregate marks. NDTV reports that the application asks for a statement of purpose and a CV of no more than four pages. Selection runs through an online test followed by interviews.
Who is eligible
The institute-wide bar is a master’s degree in science or mathematics, or a four-year bachelor’s degree, with at least 60% aggregate marks. Beyond the degree, candidates must have qualified a national examination such as CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, JEST, NBHM or JGEEBILS, depending on the department. Final-year master’s students can also apply; the offer stays provisional until they meet the degree criteria at admission. Applications are submitted only online through the IISER Pune PhD admissions page, and a non-refundable application fee applies to every application. Fellowships used for eligibility, such as CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF, must remain valid at least until January 1, 2027, when the batch begins.
