The application window for IIITDM Jabalpur’s winter PhD intake closes on October 28, six days from now. The institute has opened 106 doctoral seats for the 2026-27 winter session, and the notification clarifies that qualifying GATE, CEED, NET or an equivalent national-level examination is not compulsory.

The Pandit Dwarka Prasad Mishra Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur, notified the admission round on October 12, and the round was still open when reported on October 20. Of the 106 vacancies, 68 fall in the GATE-qualified category and 38 in the non-GATE category. GATE-qualified applicants and those with equivalent national-level qualifications are preferred for admission, while candidates without those scores can apply for the non-GATE seats.

Where the seats are

The seven disciplines open for applications are Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Smart Manufacturing, Design, Natural Sciences (Physics) and Natural Sciences (Mathematics).

Admissions run in full-time and part-time modes. The full-time routes include the Institute Assistantship track, fellowship-funded seats supported by agencies such as CSIR, UGC, NBHM and DST, and sponsored seats for candidates from government-recognised R&D organisations and industry. Part-time options exist for institute staff, project staff and external candidates. The institute is an Institute of National Importance, established in 2005 on a 260-acre campus at Dumna near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, with a research focus on IT-enabled design and manufacturing.

The split is what makes this round worth a look for candidates without a GATE score. Funded PhD seats usually go to GATE and NET qualifiers, and 38 of the 106 seats here are set aside for the non-GATE category. That is more than a third of the intake open to applicants who would otherwise be shut out of most centrally funded doctoral programmes.

How to apply

Applications are accepted online only, through the official IIITDM Jabalpur website, and must be in by October 28. The portal opened on October 12, so the whole window is a little over two weeks.

Before applying, keep academic records, proof of any national-level exam qualification and other supporting documents ready. This admission documents checklist covers what Indian universities typically ask for. Candidates counting on a stipend should also read the guide on scholarships for Indian university students.

The institute advises applicants to read the complete admission notification before applying, since eligibility conditions differ by discipline and admission category.
