November 20 is the date Indira Gandhi National Open University learners need to keep in mind. The university launched its Online Assignment Management System, or OAMS, on October 28, and eligible students can now submit their assignments for the December 2026 term-end exams without visiting a study centre.

The system is for learners enrolled in IGNOU’s open and distance learning and online programmes. A press release from the Ministry of Education on October 28 announced the launch. Students submit course-wise assignments through their IGNOU Samarth student accounts, and the portal gives an online acknowledgement along with access to the evaluation status of what they uploaded.

How to submit through OAMS

The process keeps one part of the old routine. Students still write their assignment answers by hand. The change is what happens next: instead of handing over paper copies, they scan the answers and upload them.

Each course gets its own PDF, and that file must not exceed 20 MB. The first page of the PDF has to carry the student’s name, enrolment number, study centre code, course code, regional centre code, regional centre name and email address. Before uploading, students must check that the assignment is mapped to the correct programme, course and examination session. A file attached to the wrong course will not count where it was meant to.

Log in on the official Samarth portal and work through the courses one at a time. Our admission documents checklist covers the scans to keep ready before starting a submission, since a missing detail on the first page is the easiest mistake to make.

Who does not need to upload

Two groups of learners can leave the portal alone. Students who have already passed the assignments for a particular course do not need to submit them again. Students who have already handed in hard copies of their assignments to their study centre or regional centre for the December 2026 exams do not need to upload soft copies of the same work.

Dr Umesh Chandra Pandey, senior regional director and head of the IGNOU Regional Centre in Bhopal, described the system as a step towards technology-based educational services for students. He urged eligible learners to finish their submissions before the deadline and to follow the university’s guidelines, a sensible warning given how crowded any IGNOU portal gets on its final evening.

This is the second submission portal IGNOU has moved online for this exam cycle. Earlier in October, the university opened its Online Project Management System for project and dissertation reports, with a November 30 deadline. Assignments and projects now run on separate systems with separate dates, so learners who owe both should not mix the two up.
