October 13, 2026. That is the last date the Indira Gandhi National Open University will accept fresh admission applications for its July 2026 session. If you meant to apply and kept putting it off, today is the day to finish the form.

The extended deadline covers all notified programmes offered in open and distance learning (ODL) and online modes. Two categories are left out: semester-based programmes and certificate programmes. IGNOU announced the revised date on October 1 through its official X handle, and advised students to complete the process within the deadline. The cycle had opened on May 25 with July 15 as the first last date, and was pushed back five times after that: July 31, August 16, August 31, September 15 and September 30.

How to apply

Everything happens online through the official IGNOU admission portals, which run on the university’s Samarth system. First-time applicants register, pick the programme, regional centre and study centre, fill in the details, upload documents and pay the Rs 300 processing fee. The fee is non-refundable. Download the receipt and keep checking the application status until the regional centre confirms it.

What to keep ready

Applicants need a valid APAAR ID or DEB ID along with the form, plus scanned copies of a passport-size photograph and signature within the file-size limits shown on the portal. Depending on the programme, you will also need educational certificates and marksheets, and category or disability certificates where applicable. Eligibility is programme-specific and listed in IGNOU’s Common Prospectus. Broadly, bachelor’s programmes need 10+2 and master’s programmes need a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution. Reservations for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates apply where seats are limited, under Government of India norms.

Do not wait for the final hours

Expect the portal to slow down today. Applicants who leave uploads and payments for the evening usually run into the heaviest traffic, so plan them for off-peak hours and keep a second payment option ready. IGNOU also asks students to go by the official notice and the admission portals rather than social media posts when checking which programmes are open. A form saved halfway does not count as an application, so finish every step and download the confirmation before you log out.
