The GATE 2027 registration portal is open again, but only for 24 hours. IIT Madras, the organising institute, reopened applications at 10:30 AM today, October 15, 2026, and will close the window at 10:29 AM tomorrow, October 16. The reopened window carries a late fee, and IIT Madras has made it clear there will be no further extension.

The decision came after repeated requests from candidates who could not finish their applications. The 24 hours also serve those with half-done forms: pending payments, access to the DigiLocker folder, or unset consent validity can be completed before the window closes.

What the late fee works out to

Candidates in the female, SC, ST and PwD categories pay Rs 1,500 per paper. All other candidates pay Rs 2,500 per paper. Payments are online only, through net banking, credit and debit cards, UPI, or approved wallets.

How to apply before the deadline

Visit the official GATE 2027 portal and log in with your enrollment ID or email address and password. Fill in the form details, upload your photograph and signature, pay the fee, and submit. Download the confirmation page once the form goes through.

The eligibility rules are unchanged. Candidates in the third year of an undergraduate degree programme or higher can apply, as can those who have completed a degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities from a recognised institution.

Keep your scans ready before you log in. Our admission documents checklist covers what you will need for a government exam form. Deadline evenings slow these portals down, and a payment failure at the last minute leaves no time to try again.

The GATE 2027 timeline so far

Applications opened on September 2, 2026. The regular deadline fell on October 5, and the first late-fee extension closed on October 12. This 24-hour window is the last one.

The exam runs on six days across three weekends in February 2027: the 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st, across 30 test papers. Exam cities will be announced on January 4, 2027, and the result is expected on March 19, 2027. GATE scores remain the standard route into MTech and PhD programmes at the IITs and NITs, and several public sector undertakings use them for recruitment.
