If Indian Institute of Technology Madras flagged a defect in your GATE 2027 application, October 31 is the last day to fix it. The institute has extended the scrutiny-defect rectification window from its earlier October 21 deadline to Saturday, October 31, 2026. The earlier date now appears struck out on the official GATE 2027 dates page.

The extension matters because this is the final free chance to repair a flagged form. Registration closed on October 16 after a short late-fee window, so no new applications are being accepted. What remains open is only the repair route for forms that scrutiny teams have already marked as defective.

What you can fix now

The window covers defects raised during application scrutiny. Candidates can re-upload a photograph or signature that was rejected or came out blurred, correct a photo identity number that does not match the uploaded document, and replace category certificates that scrutiny found unreadable. That includes SC, ST, EWS and OBC-NCL certificates as well as PwD documents.

Fixes in this window carry no additional fee. Log in to GOAPS through the official GATE 2027 website, open the defect note on your dashboard, and follow the instruction left by the zonal scrutiny team. Candidates also receive defect notifications by email, so check the inbox linked to the application as well as the portal itself. Our admission documents checklist explains what each document needs to look like before you re-upload it.

Do not leave the correction half done. An application that stays defective can be kept provisional or rejected outright, and that decision is much harder to reverse once the window closes.

What this window does not cover

Voluntary changes sit outside this window. If you want to change your exam city, switch papers, add a paper, or correct a name spelling or category on your own initiative, that belongs to a separate candidate-request data correction window. IIT Madras has listed that window as to be announced, and it will carry a fee. It has nothing to do with the October 31 deadline, and waiting for it will not save a form that scrutiny has already flagged.

The distinction is the part most candidates get wrong. Rectification fixes what the institute found wrong with your form. The later window lets you change what you want changed. Only the first one closes on October 31.

What comes next

Once defects are cleared, the next date on the calendar is January 4, 2027, when exam city allotment is scheduled. The GATE 2027 examination itself runs on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, and results are expected on March 19, 2027.

Check your GOAPS dashboard today rather than on the last evening. A rejected upload sometimes needs a fresh scan or a reissued certificate, and that takes time no deadline extension can give back.
