Candidates who were told their GATE 2027 form had a defect have three more days than they thought. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has pushed the scrutiny-defect rectification deadline to Tuesday, November 3, 2026, from October 31. This is the second time the date has moved. The window opened on October 14 with an October 21 closing date, then moved to October 31, and now to November 3.
The extension does not reopen registration. It is only for applicants whose forms were marked defective during scrutiny. If your form was not flagged, there is nothing to do in this window, and no new application can be filed through it.
What you can fix
The window covers the defects scrutiny teams raised. A photograph or signature that was rejected or came out blurred can be re-uploaded. A photo identity number that does not match the uploaded document can be corrected. Category certificates that scrutiny found unreadable can be replaced, including SC, ST, EWS and OBC-NCL certificates and PwD documents. Document naming problems and DigiLocker consent issues flagged during scrutiny fall in the same window.
Fixes go through GOAPS, the GATE application portal. Log in, open the defect link on your dashboard, read the remark carefully, and upload the corrected file to the specification given. After submitting, check that the status changes to “Under Scrutiny: Defect Rectification Done”. That status confirms the upload went in and re-verification is under way. A form that still shows a defect message after November 3 has missed the window, and IIT Madras has said nothing about a third extension.
Candidates who need to change something scrutiny did not flag should wait. Paper choice, exam city, gender and category changes belong to a separate data correction window, which carries a fee and whose dates have not been announced yet. Trying to make those edits now will not work, because this window only handles flagged defects.
The dates that still stand
Exam city allotment is scheduled for January 4, 2027. The GATE 2027 exams are scheduled for February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. Scrutiny has to finish before city allotment, which is one reason to treat November 3 as final rather than waiting for another announcement.
If you were flagged and have not acted yet, the practical steps are short. Check your GOAPS status and any defect email or SMS from your zone, upload the corrected file before the deadline, and confirm the status change on the dashboard. Keep the admission documents checklist handy while re-uploading, so the replacement certificate or photograph does not fail scrutiny a second time.
