For most CUET UG candidates, the exam is not one day of testing. It is several days of it, with different papers on different dates, sometimes at centres far from home. Officials now want to collapse all of that into a single day.

The Ministry of Education, the University Grants Commission and the National Testing Agency are discussing a set of structural reforms for CUET UG 2027, first reported by the Times of India on October 8. The proposals on the table: cut the maximum number of subjects from five to four, shorten each paper from 60 minutes to around 40 or 45, and group subjects so a candidate finishes every paper on one allotted day.

Under the plan, a student taking multiple subjects could complete the whole test in roughly 180 to 200 minutes. Subjects would be grouped by common course combinations, so a science aspirant might sit for physics, chemistry and biology in one block, with the general test alongside, matched to what universities ask for at admission.

The current CUET UG pattern lets candidates pick up to five subjects from 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and a general aptitude test. Each paper carries 50 multiple-choice questions and runs 60 minutes, which forces many candidates to return to their centres on separate days.

Why officials want to shrink the exam

The stated aim is to cut exam fatigue and the travel burden on outstation candidates, who now have to reach centres on multiple days when the gap between papers is long. A single-day model would also ease scheduling for the NTA, which runs thousands of shifts across hundreds of centres.

Officials have asked university bodies and testing staff to examine how to simplify the test without breaking admission requirements, according to the report. Course alignment is part of the plan: some courses at universities such as Delhi University may be made equivalent so students sit only for papers directly relevant to their chosen domain.

What changes for aspirants

Nothing yet. These are proposals under discussion, not a notified change. The final pattern will come in the NTA’s official information bulletin, expected on the CUET UG portal.

Students should continue preparing under the existing pattern, up to five subjects of 50 questions each, until the bulletin says otherwise. If the four-subject cap comes through, subject selection becomes a sharper decision: pick papers that your target universities actually weight for admission.

CUET UG scores decide admission to central universities including the University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University. A single-day exam would still be the same gateway, just shorter.
