Undergraduates at Cluster University of Srinagar will soon be able to pick up a formal qualification in artificial intelligence and data science without changing their main degree. The university’s Syndicate approved a 24-credit additional programme in the two subjects at its third meeting on Tuesday, October 27, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Mobin.

The programme is meant for eligible students already enrolled in undergraduate courses, who will study it alongside their parent degree. That design fits the four-year undergraduate structure under the National Education Policy 2020, which lets students earn skill-oriented credits beyond their core subject.

A GPU centre for campus research

The same meeting approved a High-Performance Computing Centre at the university’s main campus, which will also function as its AI-Cell. The first phase is estimated to cost around ₹80 lakh and will set up the basic computing infrastructure.

Once running, the centre will provide GPU-based facilities for work in artificial intelligence, data science and cyber security, and will support research, innovation, teaching and administrative services. For a state university, that matters in a plain way: students and research scholars get shared computing power on campus for work that needs more than an ordinary laptop.

Paperless exams, and a first convocation

The Syndicate also approved expanding the university’s paperless examination system. The system was first piloted in the B.Ed. programme and will now extend to postgraduate, B.Ed. and B.Tech. programmes from the next academic session, moving more of the assessment process onto digital platforms.

The meeting cleared the Convocation Statutes, which pave the way for the university’s first convocation, along with statutes for the B.Tech. programme and the draft constitution of the Abdul Ahad Azad Chair. Students from the 2017 to 2019 batches of undergraduate, integrated, postgraduate and professional programmes also got a one-time mercy chance to complete their degrees.

Research and enrolment numbers

Prof. Mobin told the meeting that the university now offers PhD programmes in 14 disciplines, with 39 research scholars enrolled and 53 supervisors identified across its constituent colleges and university schools. The university is also considering stipends for research scholars, a form of student funding support that can decide whether a scholar stays in research.

Enrolment is moving up. Undergraduate enrolment has grown by about 7.6 per cent over 2025, and postgraduate enrolment by about 28 per cent. The university also runs a one-year postgraduate programme that lets graduates of the four-year undergraduate programme join the third semester of existing two-year postgraduate programmes.

Cluster University of Srinagar is a state public university established in 2016, formed by bringing together five colleges in Srinagar. State universities differ from central and private ones in how they are set up and funded, which is worth knowing before applying, as explained in this guide to central vs state vs private universities. Programme details, eligibility and dates are published on the official university website, which is the place to check before acting on any of these decisions.
