Applicants who expected the Central University of Kerala PhD window to close on October 26 have eleven more days. The university has extended the last date for online applications for its PhD programmes for 2026-27 to November 6, 2026, according to a report published on October 24. The extension covers both full-time and part-time programmes.

The extra time helps candidates still gathering certificates or waiting on a qualifying result. Candidates now have until November 6 to complete the form on the official university website, but apply before the final day, when portals tend to slow down.

Where the seats are

The published subject list adds up to 260 seats across 25 subjects. Chemistry has the largest share with 28 seats. Physics and Environmental Science follow with 19 seats each.

Public Health Sciences and Public Administration and Policy Studies have 15 seats each, and Education has 14. Computer Science, Linguistics and Plant Science have 13 seats each, while Mathematics has 12 and Tourism Studies has 11.

At the smaller end, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Genomic Science have 10 seats each, Hindi and Social Work have 8 each, Economics and Management Studies have 7 each, and English and Commerce and International Business have 6 each. Zoology, Geology and Kannada have 5 each, Malayalam has 4, International Relations has 3, and Law and Yoga Studies have 2 each. Check the list against your own qualifying degree before paying the fee.

Who can apply

The eligibility bar follows the usual UGC pattern. A candidate needs a two-year master’s degree after a three-year bachelor’s degree, with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade. A one-year master’s degree after a four-year bachelor’s degree, with the same 55% mark, also qualifies.

A four-year bachelor’s degree with at least 75% marks is another route in, as is an MPhil with at least 55% marks. An equivalent qualification from an accredited foreign institution is also accepted. Candidates from SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS categories, and persons with disabilities, get a 5% relaxation in marks under UGC norms.

Applicants also need to meet a qualifying examination condition. The notice starts with qualifying for a Junior Research Fellowship through UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, GATE, CEED or a similar national level examination. Read the full notice for your subject before applying, since departments can set their own shortlisting rules on top of the university minimum.

What it costs and what to keep ready

The application fee is Rs 1,000 for UR, OBC and EWS candidates. SC, ST and PwD candidates pay Rs 500. The fee is the same in both the original notice and the extension report, so candidates who already paid need not pay again for the same application.

Keep the usual documents scanned and ready: degree certificates and marksheets, a valid photo identity proof, category or disability certificates where they apply, and the qualifying examination scorecard. The admission documents checklist covers the standard papers universities ask for at verification.
