Missing a lecture at Calcutta University will now cost you marks, literally. The University of Calcutta has brought back attendance-linked marks for undergraduates: up to five marks for attendance in every paper, in every semester, starting with the 2026-27 academic session.
The revised regulations cover three-year and four-year programmes under the university’s Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), 2022. Calcutta University is one of India’s oldest state universities; if you are weighing your options across institutions, our guide on central vs state vs private universities explains how the three types differ.
How the attendance marks work
The marks follow the student’s attendance percentage for each paper. Students who attend 90 to 100 per cent of classes get the full five marks. Attendance between 80 and 90 per cent earns four marks, 75 to 80 per cent earns three, and 60 to 75 per cent earns two. The notification also lays down what applies when attendance slips below 60 per cent, so students near the line should read the official document carefully.
The theory paper now totals 75
The revised structure splits each theory paper into a semester-end examination of 50 marks, conducted by the university, and a continuous assessment component of 25 marks handled at the college level. The 25 marks divide into 20 for internal assessment and up to five for attendance.
Passing rules have tightened
To earn credits for a paper, a student must score at least 30 per cent overall and, separately, at least 30 per cent in the semester-end theory examination and in the practical or tutorial examination wherever one applies. Clearing one part will not carry the other; each component has to meet the minimum on its own.
The grade-point conversion has changed too. Marks between 90 and 100 convert to 10 grade points, 80 to 90 to nine, 70 to 80 to eight, 60 to 70 to seven, 50 to 60 to six, 40 to 50 to five, and 30 to 40 to four. Anything below 30 per cent is a fail.
Attendance marks are making a comeback
Under the earlier Choice-Based Credit System, Calcutta University students could earn 10 marks for attendance along with 15 for internal assessment. That changed in 2023, when the university moved to the CCF and replaced those marks with tutorial projects and practical work. Since then, college principals have said classroom attendance suffered, and the latest revision restores the link between showing up and scoring.
What students should do
The notifications are published on the official website of the University of Calcutta, and students should read the one that matches their programme, since the rules apply separately to three-year and four-year courses. Attendance will be recorded paper-wise each semester, and colleges will handle the internal assessment alongside it. For students used to skipping the 8 AM lecture, the maths is now simple: five marks a paper is worth the walk to class.
