A third-year undergraduate at BIT Mesra is among the students who stand to gain from a five-year agreement signed on November 3, 2026, between Birla Institute of Technology Mesra and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Under the deal, faculty from both institutes will jointly guide undergraduate projects from the third year onwards, and postgraduate projects from the first semester.

The agreement was signed by BIT Mesra Vice-Chancellor Prof Indranil Manna and IIT Kanpur Director Prof Manindra Agrawal. It covers five areas: undergraduate and postgraduate research, student exchange and internships, joint supervision of Master’s and PhD students, academic programmes, and training for staff and officers.

What the pact covers

The research component is the most specific part of the agreement. Joint guidance starts early, with undergraduates getting a second supervisor from the partner institute from their third year, rather than only at the dissertation stage. Postgraduate students get the same arrangement from their first semester.

Student movement is the second strand. The pact provides for summer and winter internships, short-term courses and workshops at either campus, so a BIT Mesra student could spend a break working in a Kanpur laboratory, and vice versa.

The agreement also provides for shared access to research facilities, faculty exchange and faculty development programmes, along with short-duration training for staff and officers. For BIT Mesra students in particular, it opens the door to joint research projects, visits to IIT Kanpur’s specialised laboratories and exchange programmes, subject to the terms of each activity.

Why the timing matters

BIT Mesra’s Vice-Chancellor linked the tie-up to the national research agenda. “Through this partnership, we aim to create new opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in advanced research, benefit from specialised academic expertise and work on challenges that have national relevance,” Prof Manna said, adding that joint research and technology development would help prepare graduates for the country’s emerging scientific needs. He also linked the partnership to the Viksit Bharat @2047 goal.

The Kanpur agreement is BIT Mesra’s second such pact with an IIT in recent months. In June 2026, the Ranchi-based institute signed a five-year agreement with IIT Kharagpur covering joint PhD supervision, shared laboratory access, intellectual property development and student and faculty exchange. Students comparing institutes can use the how to choose a university in India guide, which sets out the questions worth asking before committing to a specialised path, and the NIRF rankings explained guide for background on the national rankings.

Students and faculty at either institute should watch departmental notices for the first calls under the pact. The official IIT Kanpur website carries the institute’s announcements.
