Engineering students have six days left to sign up for a national hackathon that ends with a sponsored research trip to Moscow.

Atomic Hack India 2026 is a joint challenge from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students at engineering, science and technology institutions across India. Registration is free and closes on October 20, 2026, at 11:59 pm IST. The registration window opened on October 1.

Teams must have three or four members. Solo entries are not allowed. Applicants must be at least 18 years old when registration opened, though students aged 16 and 17 can take part with written consent from a legal guardian. Backgrounds in electrical power engineering, physics, computer science and nuclear engineering are recommended, but not mandatory.

What teams have to build

The task is a real problem from the power sector. Teams must design a protection scheme for a 220 kV transmission line that carries power from nuclear and renewable energy sources. The scheme, called a Zero-Sequence Directional Overcurrent Protection (ZDOP) system, has to detect and identify electrical faults in the line. A fault caught late can damage equipment and trip supply.

Teams will work on REPEAT VISION, a software platform built by ETC GET, a Rosatom subsidiary. The platform builds digital twins, which are virtual models of physical systems that engineers can test under different operating conditions. Every team gets free access to the software. The organisers will run introductory training webinars, and engineers from Rosatom and professors from IIT Bombay will mentor the teams through the event. No prior experience with the platform is needed.

How the competition runs

The hackathon has two stages.

  • Registration: October 1 to 20, 2026
  • Online qualification round: October 20 to 28, 2026
  • Grand finale: December 4 to 6, 2026, at the IIT Bombay campus in Mumbai

Up to 25 teams will come through the online round to the finale. The finalists will spend 48 hours on the assigned problems at IIT Bombay, then present and defend their solutions to evaluators.

What winners get

The winning teams get a sponsored research visit to Rosatom’s engineering centres in Moscow. Selected participants also get internship opportunities at ETC GET. Finalists receive branded merchandise, and participants and finalists get certificates and recognition.

Why the grid needs this

India plans to raise its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. As nuclear plants and renewable sources feed more power into the same grid, the lines that carry that power need protection systems that can spot faults fast. That is the gap this hackathon asks students to work on.

The challenge is organised by JSC ETC GET with the Rosatom Corporate Academy and IIT Bombay’s Research Hub for Green Energy and Sustainability.

How to register

Read the rules on the official Atomic Hack India 2026 page, then complete the registration form there before the October 20 deadline. Check the eligibility criteria, team requirements and competition format on the event page before applying. Hostel accommodation at IIT Bombay will be available for the finale, with a nominal stay fee.
