The form for a PhD seat at AIIMS New Delhi closes at 5 pm on November 6, 2026. Registration for the January 2027 session opened on October 23, and the entrance test follows a fortnight later, on November 21. The session itself begins on January 1, 2027.
Dates to note
After the form closes, AIIMS will publish the status of applications on November 13, 2026. Admit cards and roll numbers follow on November 17. The computer-based test is on November 21, with the expected result on November 27. Departmental assessment takes place on December 9 and 10, and the final result is due on December 23. Candidates who make the final list must join by February 27, 2027. AIIMS has said no candidate will be allowed to join after that date.
Who can apply
Medical applicants need an MBBS or BDS with at least 55% aggregate marks, or an MD, MS, MDS, DM, MCh or a Diplomate of the National Board in the subject concerned. Degrees from medical colleges not recognised by the Medical Council of India do not count.
For the College of Nursing, candidates need an MSc with at least 55% aggregate marks in a nursing speciality. Non-medical applicants need a two-year Master’s degree awarded by an Indian university, as required by the project attached to the seat. The prospectus lists the accepted degree against each seat, and AIIMS will not consider claims of similarity or equivalence for a degree that is not listed.
Fee and how to apply
The application fee is Rs 2,000 plus transaction charges for General and OBC candidates, and Rs 1,600 plus charges for SC, ST and EWS candidates. PwBD candidates are exempt from the fee.
Apply through the official AIIMS exams portal, where the form and prospectus are available. Check every detail and uploaded document before paying, since an incorrectly filled or incomplete form can be rejected. Our admission documents checklist covers the papers candidates usually need ready before starting a form. AIIMS runs a separate entrance process for its postgraduate medical courses: the INI CET January 2027 admit cards came out on October 26 for the November 1 exam.
How seats are filled
All seats in a department are clubbed, and a candidate is eligible only for seats in the department applied to. Selection runs through the computer-based test and then the departmental assessment. A candidate needs 50 marks out of 100 across the stages, including any special weightage, to reach the final merit list.
Candidates with their own government fellowship can choose from both fellowship-available and own-fellowship seats, where they meet the eligibility conditions. Candidates without one can choose only fellowship-available seats. A candidate who is allotted a seat but does not join, or resigns after joining, gets no further rounds of seat allocation.
Read the prospectus before applying, since the accepted degree and the seat conditions differ by department.
