Can a machine help teach, or does it hollow out teaching? On October 24, three universities will spend a full day working through that question. Banaras Hindu University, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur are jointly holding a national workshop on AI in higher education at the L17 Lecture Hall Complex in Kanpur. The organiser is CERTEX, IIT Kanpur’s Centre for Educational Research and Teaching Excellence, and BHU’s official social media account announced the event on October 16.

Generative AI tools have forced university teachers to rethink assignments, exams and classroom time, and this workshop is about what comes after the first wave of adjustment. Instead of general discussions of generative AI, it focuses on practical adoption: how AI fits into teaching, tutoring, learning, assessment and classroom transformation, and what it means for the role of the human teacher. Mentorship, judgement and academic values get explicit attention across the programme.

It is a full-day programme, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, built around four sessions and two open mic segments. The inaugural session at 9:30 opens with lamp lighting and addresses from IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, CERTEX Professor-in-charge Prof. Manoj Harbola, BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi and CSJMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vinay Pathak. Prof. Sachchida Nand Tripathi, Dean of the Kotak School of Sustainability, follows with a 10:30 address on intelligent air quality management.

Session II, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, takes on classroom transformation. Prof. Vimal Singh of CSJMU speaks on human mentorship in the age of AI, Prof. Manjari Gupta of BHU on AI augmentation in classroom teaching, and Prof. C. S. Upadhyay on classroom experiences with AI, with an open mic chaired by Prof. Santosh Misra to close the session.

After lunch, Session III from 2:30 to 4:30 pm turns to assessments. Prof. Sana Khanum speaks on leveraging AI for assignments, Prof. Rajat Mittal on coding assignments in the age of AI, and Prof. Aditya Kelkar presents CERTEX’s own work on AI for assessments. The CERTEX team then holds the day’s second open mic.

Session IV, 5:00 to 6:30 pm, is on ethics. Prof. Somu Singh of BHU speaks on ethics in AI, and a panel moderated by Prof. Ushasi Roy and Prof. Ritika Gautam takes up fairness, transparency, academic integrity and appropriate human oversight. Prof. Aditya Jagannatham delivers the valedictory at 6:30 pm.

The workshop is meant to produce something concrete. The expected outcomes, listed on the official workshop page, are priority AI use cases for teaching, recommendations for redesigning assignments and assessments, principles for responsible AI use, clarity on the complementary roles of AI tools and human teachers, concrete case studies, and a concise template for AI-enabled education that institutions across the country can adapt. For students comparing institutions while this conversation plays out, our explainer on central, state and private universities covers what the different types mean for fees and admissions.

Who is it for? Faculty members, researchers from universities and colleges, teachers and educators, undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars, education administrators, policy makers and professionals from industry and edtech organisations. Attendees can also take part in the two open mic sessions with their own questions and classroom experiences.
