    GMAT Practice Question-If a certain toy store’s revenue in November was 2/5 of its revenue in December and its revenue in January was ¼ of its revenue in November, then the store’s revenue in December was how many times the average (arithmetic mean) of its revenues in November and January?

    A. ¼

    B. ½

    C. 2/3

    D. 2

    E. 4

    Answer - first of all this question is covering ratios and statistics. It is very important to identify the concept so that you can quickly determine your best approach to solve a question which in turn will help you in reducing the time taken to solve a problem on competitive tests like GMAT.

    Now let’s dive into the question

    November revenue, N = 2/5 D ( D stands for December)

    January revenue, J = ¼ N (N stands for November)

    Now we can replace the value of N in the second equation;

    J = ¼ * 2/5 D

    =1/10 D

    Now we need to calculate the arithmetic mean of November and January revenue;

    Mean = 2/5D + 1/10D

    = 1/4D

    Mean = 1/4D

    Now we can solve it to find the value of D,

    4Mean = D (cross multiply the denominator)

    This is our answer, December’s revenue was 4 times the revenue of arithmetic mean of January and November’s revenue. Answer choice, E.
